Lucy king, home health aide at mount carmel hospice

Sometimes hospice co-workers will encounter their colleagues doing heart-warming things in the day-to-day work they do for the patients and the families. Things that set them apart because it requires them to be more than compassionate, more than caring. It requires them to be empathetic.

So many times, we read nominations about how the hospice caregiver treated the patient like they were their own family member. That is exactly how it was with Lucy King’s nomination – a colleague witnessed her exceptional work and submitted the nomination.

We made arrangements to surprise Lucy at the office in front of a group of her peers.

Here is what Susan Kroeker had to say about Lucy:

Lucy consistently cares for the emotional needs of families. For example, a patient began to actively die while Lucy was giving her a bed bath. Lucy noticed the patient’s decline even when family was unaware. Lucy stopped giving her the bath and found the family. She educated the family regarding the patient’s symptoms. She invited the patient’s daughter to come and kiss her mother and hold her in her final moments. Lucy created sacred space for the family to say goodbye and helped the family understand that their mom was gently passing.

Congratulations Lucy.  You truly exemplify what it means to be a Hospice Caregiver.
