Leanna Adams, Hospice Chaplain at Vitas Healthcare and Hospice
We know that hospice caregivers do the work because they love what they are doing for the patients and the families. It is often overwhelmingly inspiring to read the nominations we receive for the Hospice Caregiver Award – people giving their time, energy, and compassion at an incredibly vulnerable time in people's lives, often without compromise or complaint.
Leanna Adams is one of those caregivers that truly gives of herself in the care of her patients and families. And she does not do it for the recognition – purely for the personal reward of touching the lives of others in her care.
Chaplain Mark Hensley nominated Leanna and here is what he had to say about her:
Chaplain Leanna has served as a Chaplain at Veterans Affairs, Seattle, Washington Hospital; her Chaplain residency at Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona; Associate Chaplain, University Minnesota Medical Center; Hospice Chaplain Gentiva Hospice, Albuquerque, New Mexico and she now serves as Hospice Chaplain at VITAS Healthcare. We are happy to have her wealth of humanity alongside our patients and families. She is deserving of the Hospice Caregiver Award because she brings to bear her unique experiences to sort through the complicated grief and affairs of families. Furthermore, Chaplain Leanna is a purist in the best sense of the word when it comes to service. Her patients and families adore her. Our staff has found her to be relatable when it comes to that all important work-life balance. Finally, she is more than credible in her role. She has demonstrated a heart for all walks of life and gives her best at every assignment whenever duty calls. Recently, she has distinguished herself in bereavement services. This branch of hospice contends with exhausted caregivers, people at wits ends, an only child taking care of both parents, and so on. Chaplain Adams has provided hope by her follow through; she gently advocates small steps in the right direction to healing and living life. In fact, Chaplain Leanna has proven to have an outsized influence in bereavement care. Recently, VITAS achieved four out of five stars from Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers (CAHPS) survey. Chaplain Leanna Adams did her part and then some. It is for these reasons the Hospice Caregiver Award is most appropriate for her at this time. She is a one of a kind and a joy to work alongside for us all.
Congratulations, Leanna. You exemplify what it means to be a hospice caregiver.
