David Williams, Hospice Volunteer at Heartland Hospice

David Williams, Hospice Volunteer at Heartland Hospice

Anyone who works or volunteers in hospice is eligible to be nominated for the Hospice Caregiver Award. This program has been honoring exemplary hospice caregivers for more than 12 years. We have received hundreds of nominations over the years, and every so often we receive one that just stands out.

David’s nomination was one that just stood out. And when we reached out to Delaney Tittel, volunteer services manager at the Heartland Circleville office, she was delighted that David would receive the recognition he deserved.

Here is what Delaney had to say about David:

In the short time I have known David Williams, he has quickly become one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever met. David is instantly likable—whether it’s the patients he visits, our team, or anyone fortunate enough to cross his path. On April 17th, David celebrated an incredible milestone: 10 years of volunteering with our Heartland Hospice team. A retired ER nurse and veteran, David has continued to dedicate his life to serving others, even in retirement. He is trained as a vigil volunteer, a veteran-to-veteran volunteer, and a direct patient volunteer—always ready to step in wherever we need him. His compassion, selflessness, and unwavering commitment make him truly one in a million. The world could use more people like David. We are beyond blessed to have him on our team, and even more grateful for the countless lives—patients and families alike—he continues to touch with his kindness and care. David also received two letters of recommendation, one from our Patient Care Manager and another from our Executive Director—that further speak to just how extraordinary David is. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Here is what the others had to say about David:

David Williams exemplifies the true heart, dedication, comfort, and compassion for what it means to be a volunteer. For the past 10 years, through every change in company ownership, he has remained steadfast in his commitment to our team and our patients. David is truly a remarkable individual whose passion for service shines through in everythinghe does. With an impressive background dedicated entirely to serving others, David has not slowed down – even in retirement. He continues to give selflessly, offering his time, energy and kindness to those in need. His unwavering dedication and genuine care make him not just a valued volunteer, but an inspiration to us all. David has gone above and beyond by completing additional volunteer training to ensure he is prepared for whatever we may need. He is trained as a Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer, a direct patient care volunteer, and a vigil volunteer – always ready and willing to step in wherever help is needed. His adaptability, compassion and servant’s heart are unmatched, and we are incredibly grateful to have him as part of our team.

David Williams is truly one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever had the honor of knowing. With over ten years of dedicated volunteer service, a distinguished history as a veteran, and a long and compassionate career as a nurse, David embodies a lifetime of selflessness and heart. As a nurse myself, I understand the long hours, the emotional toll, and the deep passion required to care for others. That David not only committed his professional life to this calling but continues to serve through volunteering, speaks volumes about the kind of person he is. He is one in a million – someone who has touched countless lives, not just during this time with us, but throughout his entire journey. We are beyond grateful to have him as part of our team. The world truly needs more Davids.

Congratulations, David. You exemplify what it means to be a hospice caregiver.
