Jim Mull, Hospice RN at OhioHealth Hospice with Compassus
When new hospices join the Central Ohio community, I love going out and meeting their team and sharing information about all the great programs Schoedinger has to offer to our hospice partners. From the Hospice Chaplains HOPE Lunch to the Central Ohio Hospice Volunteer Services Managers Network to the Hospice Caregiver Award (HCA) by Schoedinger, we work hard to engage hospice staff and provide support where needed.
When new hospices nominate an exceptional caregiver for the HCA first time, they get to see how powerful it is when an outside entity comes and honors someone on their team. It was truly wonderful to recognize Jim in front of a group of his peers – many of whom were just learning about all we do to support hospice caregivers in the community.
Here is what Jennifer Porter (Hospice Volunteers Services Manager) had to say about Jim:
One simple act of kindness can create a profound impact in hospice care. Recently, one of our exceptional team members, Jim Mull, RN, shared two heartfelt stories that beautifully demonstrate his ability to go above and beyond to bring comfort and connection to those in his care. In one instance, Jim reflected on how he bridged the gap between food, culture, and healing to create a meaningful experience for a patient. "My wife enjoys cooking for others, and in her culture, there is a special porridge often made for people who are sick—it's soft, nourishing, and easy to eat," Jim shared. Knowing his patient was a fan of Chef Anthony Bourdain, who famously explored cultures and cuisines around the world—especially Vietnamese food, which held a special place in Bourdain's heart—Jim saw an opportunity to bring comfort through a personal connection. "When I told my wife, who is Vietnamese, about my patient's love for her culture's cuisine, she was thrilled to prepare something special for him, " Jim said. This simple yet deeply meaningful gesture brought more than just a homemade meal to his patient—it delivered a moment of joy, familiarity, and connection. For Jim, it wasn't just about food; it was about honoring the patient's passions and bringing a sense of home and dignity to a difficult time. But Jim's care extends beyond patients to supporting families as well. He truly believes in the importance of spending time with loved ones, which is why he makes a special effort to connect with patients and their families on a personal level. In one memorable instance, Jim spent time listening as a grieving spouse recounted story after story, filled with love and memories that defined their relationship. One particular story captured Jim's attention—a simple yet poignant tale of the late wife's adventurous spirit, how she would spur spontaneous road trips, and how deeply her zest for life was cherished. To honor this beautiful memory, Jim commemorated it in a unique and personal way. He arranged for the story to be etched onto a beautifully engraved plaque and presented it to the grieving spouse. For the family, this thoughtful act wasn't just a memento—it was a meaningful tribute to the love, laughter, and life they shared. It was a moment of comfort in a time of loss and a reminder that memories last forever. These acts of selflessness and genuine compassion highlight the remarkable caregiver Jim Mull is. Whether through the simple gift of food or a personalized gesture of remembrance, Jim's ability to connect on such a deep, human level reflects the heart and soul of hospice care. By honoring the stories, relationships, and passions of those in his care, Jim not only meets their physical needs but also nurtures their emotional well-being—a true example of why he is more than deserving of recognition for his outstanding contributions.
Congratulations, Jim. You exemplify what it means to be a hospice caregiver.
