Alice Brown, Hospice STNA at Luminary Hospice

Alice Brown, Hospice STNA at Luminary Hospice

Sometimes when we surprise a hospice monthly winner, whether in front of a group of their peers or on the jobsite, it is always a delight to see their faces light up when they learn that someone outside of their own organization is recognizing them for being exceptional.

When we arrived at Luminary Hospice and presented Alice with the beautiful basket from Sugarbush, she couldn’t believe that another organization made the effort to come out and present her a gift for just doing her job. Yet, it is more than just doing her job that got her nominated in the first place.

Susan McGarvey nominated Alice and here is what she had to say about her:

I am nominating Alice Brown for the hospice caregiver award because it is well deserved. Let me tell you a little bit about Alice... Alice has been a personal caregiver since she was 8 years old. And that is not an exaggeration. She first began caring for her grandmother at that age and has been a caregiver ever since. The first time I saw Alice in action was when I was making an unscheduled visit to a patient who had a very anxious son caring for him. The manner in which Alice provided care to this man displayed a tenderness and a certain finesse that only decades of experience and heaven above can create. It was honestly magical. Alice has a way about her that I cannot explain. She brings calm to every space she enters. Beyond providing care to our patients, she also takes care of her coworkers. We have another wonderful STNA who is about to graduate with her LPN (Hooray Char!!!), but I honestly don't know that she could have gotten through it all without Alice as her faithful sidekick. Academically - yes, but sometimes life can test you, and when life was “life-ing”, Alice was right on time. And you know what I know? I believe that it's Alice's turn! Alice will be an amazing nurse. I would like to nominate Alice to be recognized as an amazing caregiver, but also in the hopes that she has a shot at the scholarship so that she knows, that we know, that she can and will be an amazing nurse! I want to have her back the way she always has everyone else’s. Alice - you deserve the world. You deserve the love you give to come back to you 10-fold. Thank you for all you do. It is a privilege to work with you.

Congratulations, Alice. You exemplify what it means to be a hospice caregiver.
